FILMS

MAHANAGAR@KOLKATA

A film by Suman Mukhopadhyay

Director - Suman Mukhopadhyay

The cinematographic idea of the film is 'PHOBIA' and 'VIGOR' in a contemporary Indian metropolis like Kolkata. This city and its people are reeling under the contradiction of rapid global developments and innate prejudices of the 'old world.'

Director's Statement

The stories come one after the other. A folk artist and a young rock group sing a ballad on Kolkata connecting the stories. The characters and the actions of the three different stories are interrelated and create a web of non-linear brainteaser. The color, texture and the cadence border the realistic and surreal temperament of the characters and nature of the city. In this way the film catches the burden and pain of passing time. The time, space, and the personas of Manmatha, Jagadish, Biren, Rohit, Rongili - the characters of Mahanagar@Kolkata, is indicated within the cinematic boundaries as marked out by Satyajit Ray, Kurosawa and Inarittu.
