THEATRE

FALGUNI: THE PRELUDE (The cycle of spring)

Based on the 'Prelude' of Rabindranath Tagore's play FALGUNI.
Direction Suman Mukhopadhyay
First performed December 31, 2002

About the play

The King gets depressed noticing two gray hairs on his side locks. He interpreted it as a call of death. He withdraws all his kingly activities and summons the holy guru to console him with spiritual knowledge. The guru immerses the King in spiritual tide. Finally, the court poet comes and rescued the King away of his depressed state. The poet sings the song of life and its continuous flow. The King gets new illuminations.

Director's Note
Rabindranath's plays are always difficult to deal with. There is a very definitive given code and style attached to his theatre works. Pundits and scholars of Rabindranath have processed this dictum for a long time. Not following those codes would be considered as an infringement on the greatest poet of this country. So a person dares to do anything beyond those codes. And the codes are gross, hackneyed and boring. In the process, Rabindranath's plays are rarely done and lost its touch with the people. But, I think, we are making a big waste of the great plays. We need to negotiate with his plays with contemporary visual language, modern performance and styles. He needs to reconsidered and re-explored. Without revering him from a distance we must come forward and emancipate him from the bondage of scholarly tags strewed on him. I tried to do that only.
